    Introducing Angelo Garcia

    Posted by: noreply@blogger.com (Jamie Sweeney)

I met Angelo in the summer of 2010 in rather obscure circumstances. A friend and I were on a canal-boat in Xochimilco, south of Mexico City, with a six-pack of long-neck beers, heading towards "La Isla de la Munecas", which translates as 'The Island of the Dolls'. This mysterious and eerie network of canals are lined with tree's that are decorated with mutilated dolls, the 'art' constructed by the late Don Julian Santana. We came to see something weird, and weren't disappointed, but once the novelty had worn off, there wasn't much to else to do but row back down the canal for a few hours. However, in stepped Angelo, and 20 of his friends, who came rowing past us on a food and booze-fuelled boat catering for a 21st birthday party. Naturally, we felt obliged to accept their invitation, ditch our boat, and join the fun. Angelo is now a valued member of our global network.

Angelo is 23 and currently studying Finance at University in Mexico City and is also working at a Stock Broker's. We thought we would squeeze in a catch up with him to see how he is getting on...

So, Angelo, what would you say is the main thing that brands don't seem to understand about being your age?
That the cost of many products are too high for people my age.

What is the thing that you have been meaning to do for ages but just not got round to doing?
Mmmm. To start doing exercise and eating healthy food.

If you were a big brand and could use your power to make a difference, what would you do?
I would organise education programs for kids with low resources.

How do you feel about brands trying to 'engage' and 'interact' with you on social networking sites?
I think it is o.k. It is a great marketing strategy, as they know exactly where we spend a lot of our time.

What fashion brands would you say are popular among your group of friends in Mexico right now?
Abercrombie, Hollister and Armani Exchange. Things like that.

What type of music is popular in your circle of friends?
Pop Music, Brit Pop. A lot of people like David Guetta, Adele, all the rappers like XD, LMFAO, Pitbull. Personally, I prefer rock music.

What type of 'tribes' do you think exist in Mexico City?
There are 'fresa's', 'hipsters', 'rock kids', 'punks'. I don't think that there are any 'emo's' left in Mexico jaja [jaja= 'laugh' in spanish slang]. There's a new tribe called 'reguetoneros' that are taking over Mexico. They listen to reggaeton, they wear tight pants and Nike Air Force One's, they also wear a lot of bling and have weird haircuts. The 'Fresas' and The 'Hipsters' are similar. They are the rick kids. 'Fresas' wear polo shirts, jeans and sneakers, their clothes are from exclusive brands, and they listen to pop music. Hipsters also wear expensive clothes but their look is more elaborated.

What are your favourite things about Mexico?
I love the food, and it is a country full of culture and fun.
